Thursday, 30th October 2014

Goldcrest Films (Goldcrest) Managing Director Pascal Degove announced today that the company has concluded a deal whereby they will finance, sell all international rights and co-represent domestic rights to Taxonomy, a heart-warming  and quick witted comedy based on the acclaimed novel A Taxonomy of Barnacles by author and producer Galt Niederhoffer.

Part romantic comedy, part ode to the timeless struggle between father and daughter Taxonomy will directed by Liz Garbus (Bobby Fischer Against the World, Marilyn, The Farm).  A documentary veteran Garbus has is a two time Academy Award nominee, Emmy Award winner and Sundance Grand Jury prize winner.

Galt Niederhoffer, who has brought twelve films to Sundance, and won the Audience Award, Best Director, Best Screenplay and Best Cinematography there, produced four time academy award nominee Kids are Alright, Infinitely Polar Bear, Robot and Frank among many other titles.   She is also the author of three novels, including the book on which this script is based, and The Romantics, which starred Katie Holmes and Anna Pacquin and was written for the screen and directed by Niederhoffer.

The Barnacle sisters--Bell, Bridget, Benita and Beth--have been raised in New York in a gigantic apartment overlooking Central Park. Their father Barry is Darwin obsessed, self-made and increasingly frustrated by the unending chaos of being surrounded by beautiful, teenage daughters and their adventures - hilarious and poignant  - in love and life.

To ensure the survival of the fittest Barry devises a test of wits and wills that should at long last address what is to Barry the most essential of all issues: nature or nurture ?

Goldcrest will launch the film to distributors at the forthcoming American Film Market. Production is anticipated to begin in the spring 2015 in New York.

Written for the screen by Amy Lippman (Masters of Sex)Taxonomy is produced by Niederhoffer and by Amy Hobby (Lucky Them, Secretary) for Tangerine Entertainment.  Goldcrest’s Nick Quested and Pascal Degove will serve as Executive Producers.

Goldcrest Post (home to Todd Haynes’ Carol) under Managing Director Tim Spitzer will be providing picture and sound post production services.

Pascal Degove, Managing Director Goldcrest Films commented: “Galt is a master when it comes to crafting entertainment properties that speak directly to her audience and Taxonomy does that brilliantly. To have such a commercial property in the hands of an award winning, talented director is very exciting .”
